As the season starts to change and weather becomes warmer, more people in the Sacramento community are taking their exercise outdoors.

While many enjoy working out in the gym, the on campus recreational center, The Well, is getting ready for its annual 5K Fun Run where any student, faculty, staff or community member may participate.

“Right now we are approaching 1,000 participants for the 5K,” said volunteer facilitator Kenny Williams. “We are expecting this to be a great turnout this year.”

The 5K Fun Run is for competitive 5k enthusiasts as well as those who walk or run for the physical fitness.

The 5K will kick off on today at 6 p.m. at The Well. Participants will meet at The Well and follow a trail through and around campus, and will end back at The Well.

In 2012, a wide range of 15-19 year olds participated and following closely behind were 25-29 year olds.

First place goes to a male and a female and both get separate awards.

Last year, 18-year-old Matt Sandstorm won first place, coming in at 16:56 minutes. Right behind him was 25-year-old David Blue Jr. coming in at 16:57 minutes. First place female runner was 25-year-old Lauren Mulkey who came in at 18:23 minutes.

“We expect there to not only be a lot of runners, but also spectators,” said manager of membership services Jessica Roeseman.” A lot of runners have their friends come and hang out and support while they watch.”

Awards are also given to the team with the most participants and the team with the most spirit.

“I’m looking forward to getting in shape during the run while also having fun,” said senior theater major Kevin Meinz.

Late registration fee is $29 until April 18. Participants will receive a packet including a 5K t-shirt that can be worn during the run. Students can register online at thewell.csus.edu/5k.
