Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez, along with Police Chief Dan Davis and Vice President of Student Affairs Lori Varlotta, held a press conference Thursday afternoon in front of Sacramento Hall on campus.

In efforts to explain the current status of the ongoing investigation concerning the death of Sac State student Scott Hawkins, and the condition of Sac State student Quran Jones, who was shot by campus police, the administration relayed all the information that was permitted.

Gonzalez assured reporters that the administration is working closely with the campus police to investigate what happened and determine a possible motive.

“[We] want to make two points: first, the investigation is ongoing and continuing. We have been working with the students here on campus and are continuing with the process of putting everything together so that we can move forward,” Gonzalez said.

The press conference, however, only unveiled one new detail concerning Quran Jones and the police shootings. Davis leaked the new information.

“I can’t really provide any new details regarding motive or other specifics in regards to the investigation. What I can tell you is that there were three shots fired by our officers yesterday afternoon,” Davis said.

Davis said that the suspect, Jones, is in stable condition and is listed in fair condition.

Vice President of Student Affairs Lori Varlotta said that students were coping well with the tragedy. She noted that the remaining roommates will be relocated to another, unoccupied suite in the immediate future.

Gonzalez said that he thinks Jones holds the key to getting the central questions answered.

“There’s only one individual right now who can give us any inkling of what the motive was to spark this incident, and that is the suspect,” Gonzalez said. “As far as I can understand, he is not communicating – we may never know.”
