The State Hornet’s picks for fall television

“The Walking Dead”

AMC, October 14

Based off the Eisner Award-winning comic by Robert Kirkman, “The Walking Dead” will be entering its third season on AMC.

The reason I’m so drawn to the series isn’t because of the neck biters that horror fans have come to know and love, but rather the one thing that many other horror films and shows overlook: the human psyche.

All of the characters have their strengths, weaknesses and faults that are constantly put to the test.

Their wills bend and break as fellow survivors die, supplies waste away and the fear of an impending zombie attack lingers.

Characters become unpredictable and act with the sole purpose of survival and the line between good and evil is blurred as a result.

“Revolution”

NBC, September 17

This fall on TV, I’m looking forward to the show “Revolution” on NBC. This science fiction drama is produced by “Lost” creator J.J. Abrams, and looks to be rich with mythology. It’s similar to “Lost” focusing on a band of survivors, but instead of being marooned on a mysterious island, these characters are trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world in which all modern technology has been wiped out. I think the premise of living in a world without electricity is very interesting because in today’s wired world I feel we take technology for granted. “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau helmed the pilot episode, so it looks to be very exciting.

“The New Girl”

FOX, September 25

The fall season brings new classes and festive holidays, but more importantly brand new episodes of my favorite shows. This season I’m most excited for new episodes of the FOX comedy “The New Girl.” Besides being utterly obsessed with the quirky Zoey Deschanel, I just love the hilarity and ridiculousness of this fairly new series. Second season rumors say that Zoey’s character, Jess, will be fired as a schoolteacher due to budget cuts and now must deal with a whole new chapter in her life. We can also expect a ton of guest stars and new characters, including the introduction of Jess’s parents. It’s easy to relate to the characters in this series, and the writing is hilarious. If you didn’t check out season one I recommend getting caught up and tuning in this fall for new episodes.

“Vampire Diaries”

CW, October 11

I am anticipating season four of “Vampire Diaries.” Even though I have not seen season three yet because Netflix literally takes months to add old episodes, I expect to devour it in a few days and be ready to see the next season when it premieres this fall. The last time I watched, Stefan lost his brooding vampire personality and went to the dark side while his conniving and sarcastic brother Damon started winning over his girlfriend, Elena. It is not the most awe-inspiring and intellectual show out there, but the episodes are a really good hour-long break from less than entertaining homework.

“Revolution”

NBC, September 17

I’m really looking forward to “Revolution.” Anything and everything that runs on electricity has been shut off at the same time across the planet. The main challenge of writing such a premise is explaining how the electricity actually died. “Revolution” is being produced by J.J. Abrams, who has not had a stellar relationship with scientific accuracy in the past. While that’s no reason to dismiss the show immediately, cautious optimism seems to be the best approach, since it would be interesting to see how society copes with a sudden lack of basic necessities.

“Boardwalk Empire”

HBO, September 16

As of late, it seems like period dramas on TV are doing quite well for themselves. HBO has taken notice of this and started its own historic endeavor “Boardwalk Empire.”

The show takes place during the Prohibition era, starring Steve Buscemi as the lead character Nucky Thompson. Nucky is a corrupt politician with significant control over Atlantic City, using crime and corruption to get his way.

With an impressive track record of recent programs, HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” appears to be another one of those places in time we might want to stop and visit.

“Once upon a time”

ABC, September 30

“Once Upon A Time” returns this fall for its second season to bring us more stories on our favorite classic fairy-tale characters. The show follows the characters, who are forced out of their fairy-tale world by the Evil Queen and cursed to live in our world.

Season one left off with Emma Watson, the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, breaking the curse and returning the memories of the town.

This upcoming season will bring in new characters including Captain Hook, Sleeping Beauty and Mulan and will begin where season one left off with its dramatic season finale. Be sure to watch to find out what happens to your favorite fairy-tale character on this fantastic show.

“Dexter”

Showtime, September 30

This fall brings a new season for the Showtime hit “Dexter.” This season should be interesting since the end of last season had Dexter’s sister walking in on him while making a kill. For those who don’t know, “Dexter” focuses on Dexter, played by Michael C. Hall, who works in forensics for the fictional Miami-Metro PD by day and is a serial killer by night.

However, he only kills those who deserve to die like criminals who get away with murder. This season will focus on his relationship with his sister now that she knows he’s a serial killer. Be sure to tune in or Dexter might come for you.

“The Amazing Race”

CBS, September 30

A reality show that should not be missed this fall is “The Amazing Race.” The show takes 11 teams of two through a travel adventure around the world during one month. The teams have to complete tasks within a country and arrive at a checkpoint as fast as they can, otherwise they will be eliminated. Throughout their travels, we see their communication struggles and physical exhaustion. But, the team that comes in first at the last leg of the race will win $1 million.

Once seeing the first episode, you will get hooked. It gets your heart racing from the very start and even more when your favorite team is getting behind other teams.
