Sac State wakeboarders show off skills on campus, no lake necessary

Erin Rogers

Wakeboarding on campus is impossible without a

lake, right? Wrong.

The Sacramento State Wakeboard Club proved on

Thursday that you actually do not need a large body of water in

order to wakeboard on campus. With two pools of water, a

high-powered winch and enthusiastic men willing to take off their

shirts and show off their wakeboarding skills to the campus, water

sports really can happen at Sac State.

After spending four days building the

contraption, the wakeboarding club filled two large pools made of

wooden rails and plastic tarps. With an obstacle rail in the

middle, the wakeboarders left the beginning platform and performed

stunts while being pulled by the winch – the only thing missing was

the boat.

“We wanted to show the school what the

wakeboarding team is all about,” said club president Drew Glickman,

freshman film major. “Turns out you can wakeboard in the middle of

campus in front of the Library – you don’t need a lake.”

As hosts of the fourth annual Railjam at Sac

State, the club hopes this event will promote the sport and let

students know how they can have fun outside of class. By being part

of the wakeboarding club, members can wakeboard three days a week

at Folsom Lake.

“I actually look forward to Mondays,

Wednesdays and Fridays,” Glickman said. “Wakeboarding is just that

kind of sport that gets your mind off school.”

Sac State is one of the few universities in

the nation to have a wakeboarding club, and Glickman said the club

is what drew him to the campus.

“The reason why I chose this school is because

we have clubs like this,” Glickman said. “I like being a part of

such a close-knit group. I have met most of my friends through the

club.”

Wakeboarding for more than 17 years, past club

president and graduate student Dan Bright said he also came to Sac

State for the sport. Even though he has graduated, Bright continues

to participate in events like the Railjam on campus.

“This is great for wakeboarders because we are

typically behind a boat,” Bright said. “It’s nice to switch things

up and take wakeboard in the middle of school.”

Junior kinesiology major Ashlee Martin said

seeing this event on campus made her look forward to summer.

“When I heard about them wakeboarding on

campus, I didn’t know how they were going to pull it off,” Martin

said. “I can barely stand up on a wakeboard – it takes guts to do

this in front of so many people.”

“It’s really cool to ride with our friends and

cheering us on,” Glickman said.  “The campus really

came together today to have fun.”
