A man who allegedly accosted a female student in Parking Structure III Wednesday was facing the possibility of misdemeanor battery charges, but the woman told police she does not want the case prosecuted.

Public information officer Sgt. Kelly Clark said that initial reports made the incident sound like an attempted kidnapping or sexual assault, but it was actually more minor.

“It looks like the guy might have just been trying to hit on the girl for a date, maybe a little too aggressively,” Clark said.

The man allegedly touched the student’s arm and asked her to walk with him. When she refused, he kissed her on the cheek and walked away. Clark said that while it may not have been ill-intentioned, it alarmed the woman, who reported the incident to campus police.

“Any intentional unlawful contact is battery under the penal code,” Clark said. He explained that the charge “falls under a kind of generic section.”

There have been several thefts in the parking structures this year. On Oct. 13, a man allegedly stole a female student’s purse in Parking Structure II. On Sept. 8, two men approached a female student in Parking Structure III and allegedly took her laptop computer. Neither student was injured.
