ASI seeks candidates, encourages voting

In addition to the on-going U.S. presidential election, it’s also election time at Sacramento State.

“Make Your Mark” is this year’s ASI theme to encourage Sac State students to vote for student leaders. Associated Students Inc. is also seeking candidates to run for office during the next academic year.

Sac State students interested in petitioning to be a candidate for ASI office can pick up an application in the office of the vice president for Student Affairs, Lassen Hall, room 3008. The filing period is March 10 through March 28.

ASI President Christina Romero said Sac State students should participate in student government because they will be the representatives for other students.

“Student representation on-campus, statewide and even nationally is extremely important as we see budget cuts coming forward and a lack of investment in higher education,” Romero said.

Senior studio art major Ron Lethcoe said he would not personally get involved in student government because it’s a lot of pressure.

“It would be good if you (are) a government major,” Lethcoe said.

Unfortunately, not every student knows about ASI and its purpose.

Tara Abrahams, a junior psychology major, would not care to run for office because she doesn’t know what ASI is and what they’re about. She also did not vote in last spring’s election.

“I don’t know what (one does) besides attend meetings,” Abrahams said.
