The Hornets gymnastics team swept the top spots of all four events and recorded its third victory of the season during the “Pack the Nest” night Friday. The Hornets Nest was filled with 381 fans to support the teams.

Freshman Alycia Chan, sophomores Marina Borisova and Elizabeth Norvall, and senior Melissa Genovese tallied scores which were high enough to claim the top of each event giving the Hornets a 191.975-185.2 victory over Seattle Pacific.

The night wasn’t all top notch because the team has at least one, sometimes two, falls on each event, which coach Kim Hughes said was the inconsistency in which the team must work on to achieve higher overall scores.

“We missed bars two weeks in a row, which is an issue,” he said.

Co-captains Nicole Giao and Genovese both said the team has been hitting all the events during practice.

“We have what we need (practice-wise),” Genovese said. “We just need to put it together.”

The Hornets scored in the 47s on the first three events, but bounced back on floor, where the team posted a season-high of 48.775.

The night also had some highlights such as Giao’s return to the floor event.

“I was nervous, but I was hitting (the event) in the gym,” Giao said.

A few Hornets hit season highs in the victory. Genovese, Borisova, junior Amber Basgall and sophomore Eryn Stubblefield all posted season-best scores on the floor. Borisova, Stubblefield and sophomore Lauren Dyson recorded season highs on the bars.

Although the team posted a victory in the Hornets Nest this week the team must think about hosting Southern Utah, who is national ranked at No. 17, on Friday.Hughes said the team should be posting scores of 193-4 instead of the 191s.

“(That) is where we have to be,” he said. “We are capable (of that score).”

The Hornets highest season score was in a loss to San Jose State at home on Jan. 25, with a score of 192.750.
