The Sacramento State gymnastics team fell short of beating the San Jose Spartans in the tri-meet, despite claiming the top spot on the beam and vault, including a season-high vault score of 48.250, on Friday at San Jose State.

Senior Melissa Genovese took first on the beam with a score of 9.875, which helped the team post the school’s third highest score of the event. All six Hornet competitors placed in the top 10 on the beam.

Freshman Alycia Chan won the vault with a score of 9.825, which was a career best.

The Spartans improved their undefeated season to seven victories posting a 193.525 score. The Hornets fell to 2-3 with a 191.450 score, and Wisconsin-Stout placed third with 179.0.

Sac State faltered on the bars and floor.

The bars saw three consecutive Hornets fall and the team only posted a score of 47.10, where the team has usually finished with scores of 48-plus in the three previous meets.

Sac State was unable to post a score higher than 9.650, and finished with a team score of 47.125.

Junior Marina Borisova’s (38.725) two consecutive all-around titles was snapped after San Jose State’s Veronia Porte recorded 38.875 to take home the top notch of the night.

The Hornets will return home to host Seattle Pacific on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Hornets Nest.
