The Sacramento State Hornets gymnastics team posted a season-high 194.675 in its victory over No. 15 Southern Utah tonight in the Hornets Nest. The night was also filled with school-best-tying records and personal bests.

Senior Melissa Genovese recorded a career-high and tied the top spot on the Hornets history books on the beam with a score of 9.925. She also took the top honors of the floor (9.850) the first of her career.

“It’s amazing. I’ve been working for it and to finally get it tonight,” Genovese said.

Freshman Alycia Chan posted two personal best in the win over Southern Utah (193.30) on the beam and floor. She tied for third on the floor with 9.80 and placed second on the floor with a score of 8.825.

Chan also added a fourth vault title under her belt, but she sheared the top notch with junior Marina Borisova and Melissa Johnson of Southern Utah.

“It’s fantastic,” coach Kim Hughes said about the high scores.

He said he knew the team could post those numbers and recording a victory over high-ranking team meant something.

“We hadn’t even hit the 193s yet,” he said. “We had to do something extraordinary. We finally hit and it’s exciting.”

Sac State had struggled in the past few meets with its consistency, but brought everything together to post the season-high score.

“We knew we could do it,” Chan said.

Hughes said he looked at the taps from last year and the scores have been about the same last year to this year.

“It’s the right time of the season,” he said. “It’s almost identical (to) last year.”

The Thunderbirds will be travel to San Jose State without the victory, but snagged two event titles from its first away match.

The night also served as the Hornets second annual “Think Pink” meet. The meet collected donations for breast cancer awareness, which will be sent to Mercy Hospitals in the Sacramento community.
