Football coach contract extended

Marshall Sperbeck, who finished his first year coaching the Hornet football team with a 3-8 overall record, had his contract extended through the 2012 season.

Sperbeck’s team won its final two games and had 13 players named to all-Big Sky Conference honors and two honorable-mention All-Americans by The Sports Network.

Two gymnasts honored by WAC

The Western Athletic Conference named junior Marina Borisova Gymnast of the Week and senior Melissa Genovese Specialist of the Week.

Borisova earned the top spot in the all-around with a 39.150. She scored 9.725 on vault, 9.750 on bars, 9.850 on beam and 9.825 on the floor.

Genovese recorded a score of 9.875, which was good for a first place finish on the beam. Her score is tied for the eighth best score in the school’s history.

Former Hornet now assistant coach

Sarah Chlebana, who was a former Sacramento State Hornet volleyball player from 1997-00 was named assistant coach by first-year coach Ruben Volta on Jan. 25.

She was one of only nine players to tally 1,000 career kills and 1,000-career digs and bring five years of coaching to the Hornet staff.

Men’s tennis beat Oregon on the road

After winning the top three singles matches, the Sac State (2-0) men’s tennis team topped Oregon (3-1) 4-3 on Sunday in Eugene.

Kiryl Harbatsiuk, Anton Stryhas, Artur Kimenka and Holden Ching won their singles matches and Stryhas and Harbatsiuk won their doubles match.

Women’s tennis opened season with a victory

No. 56 Sac State topped No. 72 Washington 4-3 on the road after wins from Melissa Valenzuela, Anastassia Lyssenko, Karina Jarlkaganova and Joyce Martines Gutierrez; each win was from singles matches on Jan. 19.
