Sacramento State softball team split two games with San Diego and went 3-1 for the second straight weekend at Shea Stadium.

Sac State has now managed to get over the .500 mark in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference with an 8-7 mark despite the team’s disappointing overall record of 17-32.

The Hornets picked up Game one by a score of 7-1, but fell to the Toreros 3-1 in the nightcap.

Sophomore Jamie Schloedt’s bat is back after a long slumber as she finished the four-game series batting .636 (7-for-11) with three doubles, two home runs and six RBI.

“She was struggling with the outside pitch,” coach Kathy Strahan said about Schloredt’s batting against Santa Clara the week before.

Schloredt’s resurgence could be due to the fact that Strahan told her to try a 34 inch bat instead of a 33 so she could reach the outside pitch.

“I think it was a mental thing too,” Schloredt said about her batting changes.

Sac State tallied 34 hits to San Diego’s 23 in the four-game series.

“It was nice to see the offense – the way it unloaded,” Strahan said.

Junior Amy Tompkins was 9-for-16, scored seven runs and had two RBI and senior Amy Jo McKenzie was 4-for-13, with a home run and seven RBI in the four-game series.

It wasn’t all about the bats as sophomore pitcher Kayla Meeks went 2-0 and posted a 1.08 ERA this weekend.

Jennifer Fryou, who went 1-1 in the series, shut down the Toreros in the final game of the series.

“She has really helped us out after Cassie (Cervantes) departed,” Strahan said.

Sac State had a chance to make it a four-game sweep when it had the bases loaded in the sixth inning, but the Hornets couldn’t bring home the runners.

Sac State will host Saint Mary’s in a four-game series beginning at noon on May 5.
