The Sacramento State softball team recorded its first sweep of the season and sophomore Whitney Loomis belted her first two homers of her college career on Saturday at Marsalli Park in Santa Clara.

“It was an all-around nice performance,” Sac State coach Kathy Strahan said.

After the Hornets had only five hits in a 9-0 loss to Cal on Wednesday they recorded a season-high 15 hits and 12 runs in the 12-3 victory over Santa Clara in game one.

Four athletes posted multi-hit games in the sweep over the Broncos.

Loomis led the Hornets going 3-for-6 with a walk, a double, two home runs, three runs, seven RBI and two sacrifies in game one.

Loomis said as she was rounding third base after her second home run Strahan asked what Loomis had for breakfast.

McKenzie was 5-for-9, sophomore Jamie Schloredt was 3-for-8 and junior Hilary Johnson 3-for-7.

Loomis wasn’t the only one who homered on the day.

Nori Kamada smashed a grand slam off senior Jennifer Fryou in the second inning to give Santa Clara a 4-0 lead over Sac State, but it wasn’t long until the Hornets came back with three runs in the third inning to snag the lead.

Junior Amy Tompkins’ double, a two-run homer from Loomis and a solo shot from sophomore Kayla Meeks highlighted the five-run inning.

“Hitting is contagious, if one hits we all hit,” McKenzie said.

Freshman Brittani Clifford came in to relieve Fryou in the second inning and pitched 5.2 innings to pick up her second victory of the season. Sac State won 8-5.Clifford allowed four hits, one run and struck out three.

Sac State will face Santa Clara again on Sunday in a doubleheader at noon.
