The Sacramento State men’s golf team held the lead in the first two days and came out victorious at the Independent Golf Championships on Sunday at Windsor, Co.

The Hornets won with a three day score of 863 and trumped their competition with one of the youngest teams in the tournament.

“As a team we played with all freshmen and sophomores, (which is) super young,” Coach Adam Pohll said. “For them to win this early in their career – it’s going to be fun for the next few years.”

“It was nice to show that even though we have a young team (we were able to beat) a bunch of juniors and seniors,” sophomore Scott DeBorba said.

Utah Valley State (874) came in second and host Northern Colorado finished third with an 875.

“That’s a big margin of victory,” Pohll said. “We thought it was going to be closer.”

Freshman Grant Norton finished second with a tournament score of 209 after shooting a three under par 69 on Sunday.

“Grant has been playing well all year and we expected him to shoot well, but not seven under,” Pohll said.

DeBorba shot his second straight 72 ) and finished with a 218, sophomore Jeremy Harris shot a 75 to finish with 218, Cody Miller shot a 79 to finish 222 and freshman Kyle Candlish shot a 77 to finish at 226.
