Sophomore Jamie Schloredt is back to her hitting ways, but the Sacramento State softball team still isn’t hitting with players in scoring position.

The Hornets fell to the Nevada Wolf Pack 3-2 in game one and 5-2 in the nightcap on Thursday in the brand new Christina Hixson Softball Park.

“We’re doing everything we can do,” Sac State coach Kathy Strahan said.

Sac State managed just four runs on the day, but only went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

Strahan said it was nice to have Schloredt back, but noticed that some players don’t have the same attitude at the plate as Schloredt.

“Jamie grits her teeth,” she said. “Some look a little scared.”

The Wolf Pack came full force against the Hornets, belting three homers during the doubleheader.

Katie Holverson (4-11) went the distance allowing seven hits to give Nevada the win in game one, while Kayla Meeks feel to 4-9, allowing nine hits and three runs. The Wolf Pack recorded all three runs in the first two innings, which were highlighted by a two-run home run by Brittany Puzey in the first inning.

The Hornets had a number of chances to score throughout the first five innings, but had to wait until sophomores Schloredt and Rachel Miles each cranked solo homers, but it wasn’t enough as Holverson shut them down in the seventh.

The nightcap wasn’t any different.

Nevada’s Sam Bias and Sarah Hunt hit homers off Michele Bochenski (2-7) to give the Wolf Pack the upper hand. Bias hit a three-run shot in the third and Hunt a solo in the fourth.

Senior Jennifer Fryou relieved Bochenski to pitch 2.2 innings with only one hit, two walks, two strikeouts and no runs.

“In the last two outings she’s done a nice job,” Strahan said. “She got my attention.”

Schloredt lead the Hornets going 5-for-5 on the day, with a double and a homer.

“It’s a really big relief,” Schloredt said, who was sidelined with a back injury during the home opener on March 14. “I figured stressing out wasn’t going to help – it will come back – I needed to do what I do and play my game.”

Schloredt is now hitting .443 (31-70).Whitney Loomis went 3-for-6, Miles was 2-for-6 with a homer, Hilary Johnson was 2-for 7 and Meeks had a double for Sac State.

Schloredt said the tough pre-conference schedule has been good for the team.

“It has been good for us to play the tougher teams,” she said. “This helped us get the right start.”

The Hornets will play at noon at Portland State to open the Pacific Coast Softball Conference with two doubleheaders on April 6 and April 7.
