Senior Warwick Foy clinched the Causeway Cup for Sacramento State who brushed by the UC Davis Aggies 4-3 on Friday. By defeating its archrival. Sac State men’s tennis improved to 17-4 on the season.

The doubles point looked bleak for the Hornets. Warwick Foy and Ramon Perez fell 8-5 in No. 3 doubles while No. 2 Hague Van Dillen and Xavier Barajas-Smith saved a match point and won 9-7.

Number one doubles Anton Stryhas and Gabriel Loredo rallied from 5-2 down to go ahead 8-7 when Loredo served to win the doubles point on his third match point.

“It was a great feeling, but we didn’t know how No. 2 doubles did,” Stryhas said.

After the doubles, the team met together to talk about the challenges that singles would bring. Assistant Coach Kevin Kurtz said “The louder the crowd, the more you gotta love it.”

In singles action, No. 1 Barajas-Smith and No. 2 Anton Stryhas won in straight sets.

Kurtz praised Stryhas by saying “That was the most amazing tennis I have seen out of you.”

Sac State upped their lead to 3-0, but the Aggies would not fold.

Ramon Perez could not shake off the rust after missing two weeks with injury and lost 2-6, 4-6 at No. 4.

At No. 6 Tim Lantin dropped a tough three setter giving the Aggies two points and thoughts of an upset and the Causeway Cup.

Fortunately No. 4 Foy rallied 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to win the match and preserve the bragging rights for the Hornets.

Gabriel Loredo lost the final match of the day in a tiebreak, but he did not leave the court with his head down. Instead he joyfully hopped off the court with the team win.

Sac State next travels to 68th ranked Santa Clara at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
