Gymnastics wins WAC Championship

The Sacramento State Hornets gymnastics team made history on the road Saturday.

For the second consecutive season, the Hornets captured the Western Athletic Conference title with a season-high of 195.275 in Southern Utah.

“This year we didn’t have as much team depth as last year,” Coach Kim Huhes said. “So we knew we had to hit every routine, and we hit all 24 routines.”

Not only did the Sac State team make school history, but it broke the school and conference record on the balance beam with a 49.325.

“We knew we had to hit everything,” junior Tiffany Bass said. “? Hearing (we broke the school and conference record) was so amazing.”

The beam rotation was capped off as junior co-captain Melissa Genovese took home the top spot on the beam with a 9.9.

“I’m so overwhelmed,” Genovese said.

With the victory, the Hornets have qualified for the NCAA West Regionals for the second year in a row, which marks the first time in school history that the team qualified in back-to-back years.

“It’s amazing,” Genovese said. “I’m so proud of every member of the team. It took a complete team effort.”

Hughes said the team made three goals this season: to have a winning season, which was completed, to win conference, which they did Saturday and to make it to the NCAA West Regionals. The team is heading to Berkeley, ranked fifth for the Regionals.

“Randy (Solorio) said unofficially we are 35th in the nation,” Hughes said. “And doing that on the road (was great).”

Sophomore and reigning WAC freshman of the year Marina Borisova took home second place in the all-around with a 39.275 and a first-place tie on the floor with a 9.850.

Utah State’s Jessica Parenti-Otte took the top honors with a 39.350 all-around score.

Borisova was named to the first-team all-WAC in the all-around, beam and floor and named to the second team for vault.

Genovese was named to the first team on beam and second for floor. Junior Alexis Bass was named to second team for bars.

Bass, freshmen Lissa Zamolo and Eryn Stubblefield were all named to first team on the beam to round out the honors for Sac State.

The Hornets edged out the Southern Utah Thunderbirds by .050 as they finished with a 195.225. Utah State took third with 195.175, San Jose State was fourth with 193.750. Fifth was Cal State Fullerton with a 193.625 and Boise State finished sixth with a 193.300.
