Cal softball suffocates Hornets

The California bears softball team, led by the offense of Bermince Masaniai and the combined five-hitter thrown by pitchers Lauren Frankiewicz and Marissa Drewrey, shut down host Sacramento State at Shea Stadium Wednesday.

Sac State lost 9-0, and dropped the fourth game in four days. Sac State coach Kathy Strahan said since the Cal game was just a single game she wanted to use it as a light workout for the team.

“I wanted to get everyone in,” she said.

Strahan also gave sophomore pitcher Kayla Meeks a brake. Meeks pitched 26 innings over the four games against Loyola Marymount.

“I didn’t want to flirt with an injury,” she said.

The Bears got an early lead after Alex Sutton, Erika Racklin and Gina Leomiti all singled and Masaniai belted a two-run homer to left field in the third.

The Hornets couldn’t connect the bat to the ball and Cal continued to railroad Sac State, scoring three more runs in the sixth and two in the ninth.

The closest the Hornets got to scoring was when Sherry Clark and Amanda Meyer advanced to third in the fourth and seventh innings, respectively.

When the team isn’t hitting Clark said the team tries to make adjustments, but after hosting Loyola Marymount last weekend she said the team was tired.

“It was like playing five games,” Clark said.

Strahan made changes in the fifth inning, but the energy level had gone down after Cal took a 4-0 lead.

“I don’t know how, but in the second half the energy left the park,” she said.

Junior Amy Tompkins said it’s hard to keep the energy level up after the other team scores as fast as the Bears did.

Sophomore Jamie Schloredt grabbed two softball balls and told Tompkins to get everyone ready to dance.

Schloredt began bagging the balls against some wood boxes in the dugout, giving her teammates a beat to cheer to.

“Jamie always does that when the team is down,” Tompkins said.

The team next travels to Santa Clara for doubleheaders at noon on Saturday and Sunday.
