Volleyball wins 10th straight Big Sky regular season championship

With a 3-1 victory over the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks at the Rolle Activity Center, the Sacramento State Hornets clinched their 10th Big Sky regular season championship in a row and will host the Big Sky Conference championship on Thursday.

The Hornets now have a chance to relax knowing they have clinched home-court advantage throughout the tournament.

“Its nice to be able to relax and not have it hang over our head anymore,” sophomore setter Rose Burke said.

“It’s nice to have our own fans and to not have to travel,” junior Michelle Franz said about hosting the tournament.

Junior Lindsay Haupt had 11 kills, three blocks and a team-high .364 hitting percentage, junior Jennifer Ferguson had 13 kills and seven digs, senior Atlee Hubbard had 10 kills and 18 digs andsenior Kristin Lutes led the team with 19 digs.

The Big Sky Conference Championships will be on Nov. 16-18 in the Hornets Nest. The winner of the tournament gets an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

No. 1 Sacramento State (27-5, 14-1 Big Sky) will earn a first-round bye, along with No. 2 Portland State (13-2). Eastern Washington, Montana and Northern Colorado have clinched spots in the tournament as well. The remaining two teams, Weber State and Northern Arizona face off Saturday with the winner taking the final spot.

The Hornets finish the regular season Saturday at Northern Colorado at 6 p.m. and will open Big Sky Tournament play on Friday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m. The opponent has yet to be determined.
