Softball loses two more games

The Sacramento State softball team continued its losing ways and added two more losses in the Stanford Softball Classic Saturday at Smith Family Stadium.

The Hornets fell 8-5 to San Diego and 3-2 to UC Santa Barbara in extra innings. Sac State coach Kathy Strahan said the team has been plagued with injuries and are lacking consistent starting pitching.

“We are without out starting second baseman and a starting pitcher,” she said. “(But) I’m pleased with the improvement,” she said of the 3-2 loss to the Gauchos.

Sac State pitcher Kayla Meeks held the Gauchos to three runs and 10 hits over eight innings, but it wasn’t enough as UC Santa Barbara scored a pair of runs in the eighth on a double by Tiffany Wright and solo home run by Ericka Hansen.

The Hornets rallied to score one run in the bottom of the eighth as Meeks knocked in pinch runner Hilary Johnson. In the early game the Aztecs led the Hornets 8-1 by the fifth inning. San Diego was able to belt out 13 hits in six innings against Sac State’s Michele Bochenski. The Hornets fought back in the sixth with a four run rally, but they were too far down. Sophomore catcher Jamie Schloredt went 3-for-4 with an RBI and junior Teri Ann Caoagan had two RBI to lead the Sac State’s offensive attack. Meeks scored the Hornets’ solo run against the Gauchos. Sac State has faced a number of Top 25 teams, which could be the reason for the team’s 4-13 record, which is its worst record since the team entered the Division I.

“We have had a tough schedule,” Starhan said.

The Hornets have lost eight in a row and 10 of the last 11, but will be heading home shortly. Sac State is set to play nine of its next 10 games in Shea Stadium at Sac State.

The Hornets are set to play one more game in the Stanford Softball Classic on Sunday, but the opponent has not yet been determined. The time is yet to be determined as well.
