Quakers rocked by Hornets

A few wobbles and missed routines couldn’t stop the Sacramento State gymnastics team from beating Pennsylvania with a new season high on Sunday. The Hornets beat the Quakers 193.925-192.925. Sac State’s team featured a few new faces and personal bests. Junior Tiffany Bass returned from a nearly seven week hiatus and competed on the vault (9.725) and beam (9.650).

“It was nice to do two events and be back with the team,” Bass said.

Junior co-captain Nicole Giao performed on the floor for the first time in the Hornets Nest since Jan. 7.

“The energy was really good today,” she said. She took first place on floor for the Hornets with a score of 9.850.

Junior Alexis Tsurumoto returned to the Hornets Nest to compete for the first time this season. She competed on the bars and beam, which was the first time she’d ever competed in a college meet.

“I was very nervous,” she said. “The pressure was coming back.”

Both routines were exhibition routines; meaning they were scored, but didn’t count toward the Sac State total.

“She wasn’t hitting in practice,” Sac State Coach Kim Hughes said. “She proved herself and will be in the lineup next week,” he said.

The Quakers were unfortunate to fall prey to the Hornets.

“We were slightly off on a couple of events, but I’m pleased (with our performance),” Penn coach John Ceralde said.

Junior co-captain Melissa Genovese (9.850) and senior Sara Williams (9.825) scored personal bests on the bars, taking first and second for Sac State, respectively. Sophomore Marina Borisova took second and recorded a personal best on the beam with a score of 9.825.

Penn’s Marissa Rosen snagged first place in the all-around, but Sac State took second (Genovese, 38.925), third (freshman Eryn Stubblefield, 38.6), and fourth (Borisova 38.550).

The Hornets take on UC Davis at 6 p.m. next Sunday at the Hornets Nest.
