The Sacramento State Hornets tennis team proved to be too much for the Montana State Bobcats Friday afternoon at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club, winning 6-1 and improving its overall record to 9-3 and 5-0 in the Big Sky Conference.

Sac State continued its stellar play in doubles. Anton Stryhas and Gabriel Loredo played to eight all and won 8-6 in the tiebreaker continuing their dominance at No. 1 doubles. Stryhas and Loredo were the first team to beat the Bobcats No. 1 doubles team this year.

The tandem of Hague Van Dillen and Xavier Barajas-Smith won 8-2 at No. 2 and Ramon Perez and Warwick Foy won 8-2 at No. 3.

Leading the way in singles was No. 3 Loredo and No. 5 Perez. With their energy and fight they were able to break down their opponents quickly.

Perez started out down a break but then cruised, winning 6-2, 6-2. Perez thought the deciding factor in the match was experience.

“The guy I played was a freshman and I am a senior and really wanted it,” Perez said.

Number two Stryhas played in the longest match of the day, winning 4-6, 6-1, 17-15 in a super tiebreaker.

Barajas-Smith suffered his second defeat, losing 6-7, 4-6 at No. 1 singles. He never got in his zone and fell behind early and constantly fought an uphill battle.

Tim Lantin won 6-4, 6-0, improving his record at No. 6 to 8-1 and Warwick Foy won 6-1, 6-4, improving his record at No. 4 to 8-2.

Konikov said hopes the team serves better in the next match and returns better in singles.

Next up for Sac State is a Big Sky showdown with undefeated Northern Arizona at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.
