Sacramento State beat Saint Mary’s 6-1 in its first home game of the year at Natomas Racquet Club on Saturday afternoon to improve to 5-3 on the season.

To get things started, the doubles teams took the court with Sac State winning two of the three to win one point. Anton Stryhas and Gabriel Loredo won 8-4 improving their record to 3-0 at No. 1 doubles. Hague Van Dillen and Xavier Barajas-Smith also won 8-4 at No. 2. Sac State’s No. 3 doubles team of Ramon Perez and Warwick Foy lost, snapping the team’s previously unbeaten record.

Next on the court was the singles. Number three Loredo was the first player to finish his match, winning 6-3, 6-4.

Loredo was happy with how he played. He appeared to be heading toward a third set, but poised himself and refocused. “I got lucky not losing the second set,” Loredo said.

Meanwhile in other singles action, the Hornets’ No. 1 Barajas-Smith came out of the gate slowly, but prevailed in a first set tiebreaker and won the second set 6-2. He extended his record to 7-0.

Number two Stryhas fell in a crushing match that was full of audio – everything from screams of joy to curses of anger. The match went the distance, ending in a super tiebreaker before Stryhas fell.

The team is off until March 18, when they will face both Weber State and Idaho State on the road. The team will take on Weber at 9 a.m. and Idaho State at 4 p.m.
