The Sacramento State gymnastics team recorded a season-high and placed second in the quad meet hosted by UC Davis on Friday.

Cal took first place with a 196.5, Sac State had a 195.15, San Jose State came in third with a 194.5 and the Aggies finished with 193.15. Junior co-captain Nicole Giao said the team was happy with the score and didn’t frown about the second place finish behind the Golden Bears. “Cal looked great,” she said. “They deserved their score.”

The 195.15 will replace the 191.9 against Seattle Pacific on Feb. 9 as part of Sac State’s regional qualifying score.

The Hornets came into the quad meet seventh in the region and only six will advance to the NCAA West Regionals.

Sac State has one more chance to eliminate a low score in its RQS when they travel to Cedar City, Utah for the Western Athletic Conference Championships on March 31.

Sophomore Marina Borisova led the Hornets on bars placing fourth with a 9.85. All six gymnasts scored above a 9.65 on the beam to give Sac State a new school record on the rotation with a 49.1. The previous record was 48.8, set twice previously in Hornets history. Junior co-captain Melissa Genovese scored a 9.875, Giao posted a personal-best of 9.85 and freshman Lissa Zamolo scored career-high of 9.825 to lead the Hornets on beam.

Borisova tied her career-high taking the floor event with a 9.925. Junior Tiffany Bass finished with a career-high of 9.85. Sac State finished with a season-high on the vault with a 48.6. Borisova topped the Hornets with a 9.775, freshman Amanda Bieber recorded a career-high with a 9.750, Senior Sara Williams posted a 9.725, while Giao scored a 9.7.

Borisova tied the school record of 39.350 to take second place in the all-around and Genovese posted her second consecutive 39.0 in the event.

Cal’s gymnasts topped three events during the meet. Isabel Garcia took the vault title with a 9.825, Bridgett Glass and Lydia Williams both scored a 9.9 on bars, and glass and Jessica Kelley received 9.9s on the beam.
