Winning isn’t everything.

Anyone on the Sacramento State gymnastics teams would say they love to win, but gymnastics is a unique sport where the score, not necessarily the outcome, is what really matters. On Sunday the team set a new season-high mark, even if it ended with a loss.

Sac State coach Kim Hughes said that San Jose State is a bit higher and Cal is a bit lower than Sac State in the ranking, but every high score helps the Hornets. “We are now able to count our 193.925,” he said, referring to the scoring system that takes out the team’s highest and lowest season scores.

The Hornets shattered their previous season-high of 193.925 in the 195.3-194.9 loss to Western Athletic Conference Rivals San Jose State on Sunday in the Hornets Nest.

The Spartans snapped the Hornets’ five-meet winning streak, but no tears were shed during Sac State’s final home meet. “The energy is really high right now because of the score,” junior co-Captain Melissa Genovese said.

San Jose State coach Wayne Wright said he knew Sac State was a good team with many great athletes.

“We knew it was going to be a good fight,” he said.

Wright said the team worked on the little things like landing, which gave San Jose State the edge Sunday.

The scores were close until the Hornets hit a snag during the beam rotation. Sac State posted a 48.275. Sophomore Marina Borisova, who snagged the top honors, winning the all-around (39.275) along with a first on bars (9.9) and floor (9.9), said the loss was a bit upsetting, but with two more meets she believes the Hornets can beat the Spartans.

“We still have Davis and the WAC,” she said. “Were going to have time to get (the Spartans) back for the loss.”

Sac State recorded seven personal bests during the meet. Three career bests were on the bars; Borisova tied her best with a 9.9, freshman Lauren Dyson tied for third with 9.825 and freshman Eryn Stubblefield posted a 9.725.

Senior Sara Williams led Sac State to a season-high on the vault with a 48.5. Williams recorded a career-best on vault tying for third with 9.775 and Genovese vaulted for a career-high 9.65.

Junior co-captain Nicole Giao posted a career-high on the floor with a 9.875. Genovese took second in the all-around with a 39.175, which was her best score yet.

Sac State will compete in a quad meet against Cal, San Jose State and UC Davis at 7 p.m. on Friday at Davis.
