The Sacramento State gymnastics team flipped past the heat, tight judging and its rivals from UC Davis 192.625-191.975 on Sunday at the Hornets Nest.

The gymnasts had to deal with a hotter gym than normal, making the competition difficult.

Junior co-captain Melissa Genovese said Sac State has a good beam so sweat accumulation wouldn’t be a problem on the four-inch wide apparatus.

Sophomore Marina Borisova recorded first on the bars, floor and all-around, the last of which she said was a surprise.

“I didn’t think I would win,” she said. “I wasn’t doing my best.”

Both the Hornets and Aggies were receiving fair scores from the judges, but Sac State coach Kim Hughes said the scores were fairly tight throughout the meet.

“We need the high score for our RQS (Regional Qualifying Score),” he said.

A team’s RQS is calculated by taking its top six scores of the season, dropping the highest score and averaging the next five. No more than three of the counting scores can come in home meets.

UC Davis coach John Lavallee said his team had its best performance of the season, recording 22 of 24 routines without falls, but gave Sac State props in the victory.

“Sac is consistently scoring ahead of us,” he said.

Senior Sara Williams agreed with Lavallee, saying UC Davis always has its best meets in the Hornets Nest.

Even with the tight judging the Hornets managed a season high on the bars (48.650) as junior Alexis Tsurumoto (9.775) snagged the top spot in her first time competing on the event this season. Tsurumoto preformed (exhibition) on the bars for the first time on March 4 after a fractured finger took her out prior to the season.

“It was nice to have Alexis back in the event,” Hughes said.

Sac State had a few mishaps throughout the meet with a fall on beam, out of bounds on the floor and some landing issues on the vault.

Genovese said when someone falls during a routine the team is quick to encourage fellow teammates get them hyped for the next event.

“We are really good at picking (the girls) up,” she said.

The Hornets will host conference rival San Jose State where seniors Williams and Courtney Hibler will perform at home for the final time at 2 p.m. on March 18 in the Hornets Nest.
