Wanless to announce football coach on Wednesday

Hornet Athletic Director Terry Wanless said that he will release the name of Sacramento State’s next head football coach on Wednesday (Jan. 15) morning.

The top-two candidates are NFL assistants Jim Skipper and Steve Mooshagian.

Skipper is currently under contract as the Carolina Panther’s running backs coach. He also coached the San Francisco Demons of the short-lived Extreme Football League to a 6-6 record in 2001.

Mooshagian served the past four seasons as the Cincinnati Bengals’ receivers coach. He also served as head coach at Fresno City College in 1995.

Both Skipper and Mooshagian made trips to Sac State last week.

Originally, Wanless was hopeful to make his decision by Christmas, but the process was set back when several candidates dropped out.

Assistant coaches have led recruiting and off-season efforts in the absence of a head coach.
