Volleyball sweeps past Idaho State

The Sacramento State Hornets are one step closer to hosting the Big Sky volleyball conference tournament later this month with the swept over the Idaho State Bengals on senior night.

The Hornets (26-5, 13-1) trampled the Idaho State Bengals (9-20, 5-11) 30-15, 30-17, 30-22 Saturday, as the seniors played in the Nest for their final home conference match.

“This isn’t our final game here,” said senior Leah Klemenhagen, who is confident that her team will host the conference tournament.

Klemenhagen tallied seven kills for a .429 hitting percentage, second behind junior Jennifer Ferguson, who had a .583 percentage, seven kills and five digs.

The lineup was a bit different in each game as coach Debby Colberg went with seniors and starters, switching it up with the bench later on.

Senior Kristin Lutes noticed that the chemistry from game to game didn’t change as it does when newcomers fill the court.

“It can be hard (to play with players we’re not used to), but we are all a team, not just the starters,” she said.

“They executed well with the players who don’t get on the court much,” said Colberg of her starters.

Game one came easy for the Hornets as they led the Bengals in digs (19-15), recorded more kills (12-5) and forced four Bengals to hit in the negative, resulting in a -.132 team hitting percentage in the 30-15 game.

Senior Atlee Hubbard had back-to-back aces, senior Shannon Roland had five kills, and junior Michelle Franz served a six-point run, including the Hornets third ace in game one.

The Bengals had a few runs throughout game two and clawed their way back with a .013 hitting percentage, but it wasn’t enough as the Hornets took the game 30-17.

Sac State started game three with an eight-point run behind sophomore Rose Burke’s serving. Burke ended the match with 14 digs, while Lutes ended the night with a team-high 19.

Idaho State had a four-point run, but again Sac State was able to dominate with a 30-22 win.

With the win the Hornets have to win only one of the next two games in order to host the Big Sky Conference tournament.

Sac State next plays at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Northern Arizona.
