New school, new coaching challenge for Sperbeck

As new football coach Marshall Sperbeck adjusts to his new administrative responsibilities at Sacramento State, the adjustments may be considerable compared to his time at Foothill College.

“I’m just getting used to those things and also getting a chance to meet (people). Obviously I got a lot people I need to meet on campus, out in the community, so I’ve been trying to do that everyday also,” Sperbeck said.

Sperbeck now heads into the semester with a full coaching staff.

Returning to the staff are special teams coordinator Richard Sanchez, defensive backs coach Steve Robinson in his first year as a full-time coach, and defensive coordinator Lou Baiz. In his 13th year coaching, Baiz is the longest tenured coach on the football staff.

New to the program are running backs coach Aaron Ingram and offensive line coordinator Jeff Remington, who are following Sperbeck from Foothill. Receivers coach Daniel DePrato and linebackers coach Josh Brown worked under Sperbeck as a defensive assistant at Foothill for five years.

Sharing his philosophy from Foothill, Sperbeck wants to build structure, discipline and consistency in the Sac State football program.

“I think if you can follow those three components and build on them and implement them into the kids daily lives with their school and football, I think you can get the most out of your student athlete,” Sperbeck said.

The team hasn’t received any commitments to the next season, Sperbeck said, but has been communicating with several recruits. Two of those prospects include players from Foothill, but due to league policy Sperbeck could not release the names of any potential players.

When it was announced on Nov. 27 that former coach Steve Mooshagian’s contract would not be renewed, Athletic Director Terry Wanless said the school would conduct a national search for the team’s new coach.

Out of approximately 70 candidates, Sperbeck was one of three finalists chosen to interview for the vacant coaching job, Wanless said.

The other two final candidates were San Jose co-defensive coordinator Tom Williams and Sierra College coach Jeff Tisdale.

Sperbeck was introduced as the new coach for the football team on Jan. 13. by campus President Alexander Gonzalez.
