Men’s soccer ready to take conference

Fresh off its record-breaking 2005 season, the men’s soccer team is energized for another invigorating season. After finishing with their best season record since 1992 with an overall record of 9-7-2, the Hornets are looking for more victories in 2006.

The Hornets completed last season with a record of 7-1-1 at Hornet Soccer Field, setting a Division I program record with an eight match unbeaten streak at home. It was also one of the team’s most successful seasons in Division I history. The men tallied a total of 26 goals for the season while delivering four shut-outs, which hadn’t been done since 1995.

This season brings a much more demanding non-conference schedule than in previous years.

“We have some quality opponents in the non-conference schedule and it will give us the opportunity to test ourselves,” Coach Michael Linenberger said.

With seven returning starters, 15 returning letter winners and six newcomers to the team this year, there are many Sac State players to watch for in 2006.

Midfielder Jack Jones emerged as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week last week after he scored two goals against Valparaiso. Jones may be the Hornets’ most versatile player.

“We’ve gotten off to a slower start than we would’ve liked,”Jones said. “But we’re coming together nicely and are ready to contend for the league championship.”

Not to be forgotten are Ryan Rhoads and Oscar Sandoval, who lead the team in career goals. Forward Ryan Rhoads currently leads the team with the most career goals scored, with 13. Forward Oscar Sandoval is second, with eight career goals.

Linenberger believes that Rhoads is an unbelievable player. “He is a clean and clever player and can score in a variety of ways.”

“Oscar brings flair, a professional approach and an ability to score goals,” Linenberger said.

Although the men are off to a rocky start, 2006 looks to bring many engaging matches for the Hornets including games against Cal and conference-rival New Mexico. The team looks forward to turning it around and making it a successful season.
