Letter to the Editor: Bipolar Far From Sexy and Cool

Lia Robertson

In response to Andrew Nixon’s column, “Bipolar’s life is both chic, glamorous . . .”, I must argue that although the general population might consider mental illness to be sexy in the media and for celebrities, the reality of mental illness is a long-term, extremely difficult, and often life-threatening struggle. After years of confusion, stress, and frustration, a close friend of mine was finally diagnosed with severe Bipolar I Disorder. Because of the symptoms of his mental illness he has struggled with school, jobs, and keeping friends his entire life. In fact, his nine-year relationship with his wife almost ended because of the strain this mental illness puts on their relationship. It is probably true that some people are diagnosed incorrectly; however, for the large number of people who really have Bipolar Disorder, the impact on their life and those around them is far from sexy or cool.
