Splitsville: Hornets and Vulcans each win one in double-header

After Sac State’s 9-0 shutout of Hawai’i-Hilo on Saturday at Hornet Field, the Vulcans came back and won the second match of the afternoon double-header in stunning fashion, 6-3.

In just the bottom of the first inning, Sac State struck for the day’s first run.

First baseman Brett Flowers scored center fielder Travis Kassebaum with an RBI single to right field, putting the Hornets up 1-0.

Sac State widened their lead in the fifth inning thanks to a plethora of Hawai’i-Hilo mental mistakes and errors.

In the wacky inning, catcher Matt Wilson was obstructed — while in a rundown — trying to retreat back to third base; because of the obstruction, Wilson was automatically given home plate. Left fielder Josh Levin then scored on shortstop Everet Rincon’s bunt after Vulcan catcher Tyler Curtis dropped the throw home from the pitcher.

Right fielder Jim Strombach took advantage of the opposition’s mistakes by stroking a two-RBI single up the middle, scoring Rincon and second baseman Taylor Watanabe. After the inning was all said and done, the Hornets scored four more runs, giving them a 5-0 lead after just four innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, Sac State blew the ballgame wide open with three more runs.

Strombach smoked another RBI single, scoring Rincon. Kassebaum then stole home on a double steal, and after Kassebaum scored on a wild pitch, the score was 8-0 in favor of the Hornets.

After Rincon scored on a balk in the bottom of the seventh, the Hornets would slam the door on the Vulcans for the 9-0 romp.

Rincon finished the game with three runs, while Wilson went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run.

Hornet starting pitcher Kyle Christensen got the win, going five innings, scattering five hits, allowing no earned runs and striking out four.

The 9-0 blanking of the Vulcans was the Hornets’ second shutout of the season.

Despite the rout, things were a little tighter in the second game of the day.

The Hornets continued their hot hitting, though, getting on the scoreboard first once again.

In the first inning, Wilson scored Strombach with an RBI groundout to second base; designated hitter Brian Blauser then sent Wilson home after he smoked an RBI double down the left field line.

The Vulcans fought back, though, tying the score at two in the fourth inning after some sloppy play by the Hornet defense; after an error at shortstop and two passed balls and a wild pitch, the momentum of the game would swing the way of Hawai’i-Hilo.

The Hornets regained the lead just an inning later when second baseman Cliff Hinkle blasted his first home run of the season over the 333 ft. sign just inside the left field foul pole.

The see-saw affair continued the very next inning when the Vulcans tied the game up once again with an RBI groundout from Alvis Satele.

The Vulcans would take the lead for good, though, as they added a run in the seventh inning off a Sean Tamura RBI single and then two in the ninth off a two-RBI triple from Gary Ahu, Jr.

The split in Saturday’s double-header leaves the Hornets’ record at 11-20-1, with the Vulcans now at 3-33.

The two teams will conclude the weekend four-game series with an afternoon game at Hornet Field, starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
