Chico gets new president, San Marcos waits

Dr. Paul J. Zingg was named the new president of Chico State onNov. 3.

The new president succeeds former President Manuel Esteban, whowas in office for 10 years until he retired last summer.

Zingg, who will become the fourteenth president in ChicoState’s 116-year history when he assumes the role inFebruary, is the provost and vice president for academic affairs atCal Poly-San Luis Obispo, another CSU campus.

Zingg received his Ph.D. in history from the University ofGeorgia.

The announcement came almost exactly eight months afterAlexander Gonzalez, former president of CSU San Marcos, wasannounced as the successor to Donald Gerth as SacramentoState’s president.

The finalists for the CSU San Marcos presidency were announcedOct. 15. A decision on Gonzalez’s successor will be announcedMonday.

Former finalist for the Sac State presidency Karen S. Haynes ofthe University of Houston-Victoria will enter the homestretch ofthe CSU San Marcos selection process. Haynes was also a finalistfor the Chico State job.

The other two finalists for the CSU San Marcos position areDennis L. Hefner, president of State University of New York atFredonia, and Ephraim P. Smith, Cal State-Fullerton’s vicepresident for academic affairs.

This will be the fourth presidential appointment for aCalifornia State University campus this year.
