Campus feuds today in game show battle

Survey says … it’s time to play “FamilyFeud” at noon today in the Redwood Room of the UniversityUnion, where Sacramento State students will be playing the classicgame show for fun and prizes.

“Family Feud” burst onto the game show scene in 1976and became one of the most successful game shows in TV history.Producer Mark Goodson came up with the idea from his hit game show”Match Game,” and hired a panelist off that show,British comedian Richard Dawson, to be the host.

Dawson’s M.O. was to make wisecracks and kiss all femalecontestants. Within a year, “the Feud” became thenumber one game show on daytime television.

It continues to be a success. Currently, Richard Karn, Al fromthe sitcom “Home Improvement,” hosts the show.

Today’s game matches five-member “families”made up of representitives from Associated Students Inc. and TheState Hornet, is an altered version of the show of “FamilyFeud.”

“We look for something that binds people (together) ashigh visibility TV programs,” said Christine Pomo, thegraduate assistant of programming for the Union.

Today’s competition features a 10-part questionnaire froma survey that UNIQUE volunteers passed out to different classes andfriends two weeks ago. “It will be a lot of fun; thequestionnaire, for the most part, is geared toward the campus orthings that students tend to do,” Pomo said.

Vice President of University Affairs Joshua Wood, a participant,grew up watching “Family Feud” as well.Wood was afan of both Dawson and another Feud host, comedian LouieAnderson.

“I used to watch “Family Feud’ throughout the”80s and “90s when I was growing up,” said ASIVice President Julio Velázquez. He looks forward to playingin the event.

“It’s low-tech, but that’s part of thefun,” said UNIQUE spokeswoman Zenia Diokno, referring to themove-it-yourself props. “We’ll make a mistake and itwill be endearing if nothing else,” Diokno said.

“Family Feud” winners will receive tickets for LaserQ, a local amusement park and Glo-bowling.
