The Sacramento State women’s tennis team ended their season on Friday after a 4-0 loss to the No. 5-ranked University of Southern California in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships.

The Hornets started off rocky in the doubles matches. At No. 2, USC’s Luana Magnani and Gabriela Anita Loyola defeated Roberta Fessenko and Amanda Sanches, 8-4. At No. 3, Trojans Carine Vermeulen and Melissa Essinero defeated Petra Abraham and Christina Riviecclo, 8-0.

At No. 1, Margarita Karnaukhova and Ann Roslund did not finish their match as the doubles point was won by Southern California.In singles play the Trojans jumped out and won the first three matches to win. At No. 4, Bryner defeated Abraham (6-1, 6-0). At No. 5, Vermeulen defeated Sanches (6-1, 6-1) and then at No. 6, Esmero defeated Rivieccio (6-1, 6-1).

Karnaukhova, the Big Sky Most Valuable Player, won the only set for the Hornets. She had a win over No. 10-ranked Petersen (6-3), however due to the USC victory they did not finish the second match.

The Hornets ended the season 16-8. They tied a program-record as four players were named to the Big Sky All-Conference team. Karnaukhova and Fessenko were named to the first team while Roslund was named to the second team and Abraham received honorable mention honors.

Head Coach Bill Campbell was also named Big Sky Coach of the Year for the second-consecutive year.
