Online ExclusiveRace for the Cure speeds into Sac

Saturday, May 10, will bring forth the Komen Race for the Cure at Cal Expo, one of Sacramento’s most popular running events.

The Komen Foundation designed the event to fundraise for fighting breast cancer and bringing awareness to the life-threatening disease.Over 17,000 participants made it the largest event of its kind in Northern California last year and more than 18,000 entrants are expected this year.

Many breast cancer survivors have joined the race and made significant made significant strides in demonstrating their strength, courage and endurance.

The registration fee is $20 dollars per adult, which will go to a fund for the cause. The competitive run itself consists of a 5km course (3.1 miles) in Cal Expo and the surrounding neighborhood streets, with a 36-minute time limit. Finishers can view their time on the digital clock at the finish line.

Alpha Kappa Delta Phi, a Sacramento State sorority, will be supporting the race as volunteers.

“My sorority always volunteers bi-yearly for Race for the Cure,” said Julie Chung, president of Alpha Kappa Delta Phi. “In October, we volunteered at the one in San Francisco, and in May we volunteer at the one in Sacramento. We volunteer because we want to help with the awareness of breast cancer.”

The Komen Foundation was founded in 1982 by Nancy Brinker in honor of the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died of breast cancer at the age of 36. The foundation is a progressive grassroots organization fighting breast cancer with a network of more than 75,000 volunteers working across the country. The Komen Race for the Cure Series funds global research efforts and local breast health and breast cancer outreach programs.
