Women’s resource center moves

The Women?s Resource Center completed its relocation to the Multicultural Center last Monday, a move that administrators say will save money and improve service.

“We are moving to share space with the Multicultural Center. We are not merging with them, we will remain two separate programs,” Women?s Resource Center Coordinator Patricia Grady commented.

The move was prompted by the need for more operating space, as well as the center?s desire to be more accessible to students. “The advantages to the Women?s Resource Center in doing this are more space and better accessibility for the students,” Grady said.

The staff will remain the same with Grady as the center?s coordinator and Jessica Higgins as the Violence and Sexual Assault Support Services Advocate/Educator.

“Where we were, there just wasn?t the space,” Grady said.

The Women?s Resource Center is given a $25,000 yearly budget from Associated Students, Inc.

“The thing that we will share that will make us both stretch our budgets is shared office space. Beyond that there won?t be any shared expenses,” said Grady.

The center hopes that with an increased operating area they can host some events from their location in the Multicultural Center.

“It allows us to be in closer proximity to things so that if we have a smaller program, we may be able to host it in that space,” Grady said.

And the move provides benefits to both programs.

“It?s an opportunity for us to increase student outreach and services to the community and women of color. It?s also an opportunity for the Multicultural Center to expand and develop their involvement in women?s issues,” Grady said.

Because many social concerns are common to both programs, Grady said that moving them into one building is logical.

“In so many ways you can?t talk about cultural without getting into gender issues. In that respect, even though our focuses and populations are somewhat different, there is such a tremendous overlap that it just makes sense,” Grady said.

The center hopes that cross phasing with the Multicultural Center will help them make better use of their limited budget, Grady said.
