Members of student political party, Vote Impact!, jumped in the Library Quad water fountain to celebrate their success Wednesday night after winning all but one position in the Associate Students Inc. election.

Terry Martin was elected president of ASI for the 2010-11 school year, with more than 40 percent of the total votes. His closest opponent, Vince Vicari received more than 25 percent of the total vote.

“I feel so great. The first thing I did after the results – and being elected – was I called my mom, and she was jumping up and down, and telling my family what had happened,” Martin said.

Martin said his first order of action when he takes office June 1 is to get people together and get all of ASI working as one.”First of business will be rallying the board. Making sure that we get all of our priorities in order. We are going to be moving as a team, our entire board is going to be moving together,” Martin said.

Runner-up Vicari said he was happy for everyone who heard their name being called by Torres, the wait for the president’s position made him feel anxious. “I was feeling excited for everyone that I voted for in the election. Just looking all over the area, people looking over from the second floor, looking at people in the café area, just see how excited they were made me just that more excited,” Vicari said.He said the entire process was tiring but he wants to stay in tune the Sac State students and his supporters going into the upcoming 2010-11 school year.

“On one side I am relieved. It has been such a long process. More things have happened to me in this month than have ever happened to me in my entire life. I am a little exhausted,” Vicari said. “I am disappointed because I was pulling, if not for myself, for any other candidate than the one that won.” In addition to announcing Martin’s win, Torres announced the additional winners for this year’s election. The new ASI, Inc. Executive Board members are: for vice president of Academic Affairs, Sarkis Piloyan; for vice president of University Affairs, Sarah Couch; for vice president of Finance, Chris Smith; and for executive vice president, Rylan Gervase.

Torres also announced that the three top student organizations which registered the most votes were Sigma Chi Fraternity, with 62; Salsa Loca, with 58; and third, the Morris League, with 56.

This year’s election drew out more than 2,300 voters, which constitutes more than 9 percent of the student body. Since last year’s election, the voter turned has decreased by approximately 8 percentage points. Still, Martin said he was happy that students participated in the election.

“I’m just so happy right now. This was the result of three years of involvement in ASI and clubs and organizations,” Martin said. “I am just so happy that the students chose me.”
