Work on River Front Center to end Tuesday

The River Front Center’s repairs on the wastewater leak in a crawlspace in the flooring will be completed mid-afternoon Tuesday.

The center’s restaurants will not open until the vendors can receive deliveries and resume business.

Celexsy Adame, marketing services director, said that the goal is to have the restaurants open as soon as possible.

The center was closed on Feb. 11 when it was discovered that the plumbing had degraded underneath the floor. This condition had gone unnoticed for months or possibly years.

Linda Hafar, utilities and facilities services director, estimated that the center has accumulated $5.12 million in deferred maintenance.

“State funding just hasn’t kept up with our maintenance needs on campus,” Hafar said. “We’re in the terrible position of having to react, not prevent.”

An outside contractor was called in on Feb. 12 and work started immediately.

All other campus food facilities remain open.

“We were lucky this time,” Hafar said. “We’ve only been down a week and a half.”
