The Hornets made a valiant comeback effort against the Santa Clara Broncos on the road Tuesday, but couldn’t overcome an early 6-2 deficit, losing 7-6 and dropping to 19-24 on the season.

Sacramento State senior Wes Oberlin went deep to center in the second on his way to a 3-5 performance, and fell a triple short of the cycle. Five other Hornets contributed with an RBI, including junior Gabe Jacobo with an RBI triple. The Hornets tied it up in the top of the eighth, but it wasn’t enough.

Hornet junior Mike Weiss was credited with the loss (0-1), pitching one inning and giving up the winning run on an RBI single to Bronco Matt Long in the bottom of the eighth. Long went 4-5 with 4 RBI’s, a double short of the cycle.

Bronco Matt Willinsky picked up the win to improve to 3-2 in one and a third innings of work. With the win, the Broncos improve to 27-16.

The Hornets next will travel to take on the University of Hawaii Rainbows in a four-game set starting Friday at 6 p.m. Hawaiian Time.
