San Jose State hammers baseball, sweeps doubleheader

A day after beating WAC opponent San Jose State Friday night, the Sacramento State baseball team was swept by the Spartans in a double-header Saturday. The Hornets were beaten 13-1 and 5-1 in the two games that were played at Municipal Stadium in San Jose.

Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Hornets allowed eight runs, giving the Spartans a lead they did not relinquish. San Jose State scored seven of its eight runs with two outs.

The Hornets did not perform well at the plate, managing only two hits in the ballgame. Their only run came in the top of the fifth inning when senior designated hitter Jeff Hannah scored on freshman second baseman Hunter Martinez’s fielder’s choice.

In the second game of the double-header, Spartan’s junior starting pitcher Scott Sobczak threw a complete game. In his second win of the season, Sobczak struck out nine Hornets, walked one and allowed one earned run.

A lack of run production plagued the Hornets in both games – they amassed two runs on 10 hits, which were all singles, the entire afternoon. After going 0 for 2 in the first game, senior third baseman David Flores went 3 for 4 in the second with three singles. He was the only Hornet to get more than one hit in the two games combined.

The Hornets will face the Spartans one more time at 1 p.m. Sunday at Municipal Stadium.
