Roseville takes next step in Sac State annexation

The Roseville City Council approved a request Wednesday to begin processing the annexation of 2,200 acres of land that could be the future home of a Sacramento State satellite campus.

Along with a new campus affiliated with Sac State, current plans for the development of Placer Ranch include nine million square feet of commercial and industrial land and about 5,000 new homes. The new campus would also have approximately 1,700 housing units for students and faculty. City Council members believe that the city would benefit greatly from a public university, including the estimated 20,000 jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars it would bring to the local economy.

The Placer Ranch project was originally proposed as a Placer County development until last month when project organizers submitted a formal request to the city of Roseville asking that the property be annexed. In a letter to the city, Placer Ranch Partners cited a higher cost for services in the county than Roseville. Holly Tiche, president of Placer Ranch, said Placer County’s estimates for supplying the property with police, fire and other urban services were much higher than Roseville’s. The land was originally donated to Sac State in 2003 by developer Eli Broad, owner of Placer Ranch Partners.

Placer Ranch officials estimate that it will be a year or longer before the project will be ready for approval by the Roseville City Council.
