The human body is so intricate that to look at it from a single point of view would hinder one’s imagination. This philosophy is the basis for the new art exhibit “Field of Life – The Body in Contemporary Korean Art,” which opened at the Sacramento State Library Gallery on Friday and will run through Feb. 29.

Curated by artists Koo Kyung Sook and her husband Ian Harvey, an assistant art professor at Sac State, the exhibit includes works by nine Korean artists, five of whom have never presented their work in the United States.

“The artists included in this free exhibition have been selected to indicate the diversity of work that currently addresses the subject of the body in Korea,” Koo said in a written statement.

Artists display their work using a variety of traditional and contemporary media, including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, video, digital imaging, animation, ceramics and sculpture.

The diverse collection of art gives students a chance to see the body from many different points of view.

“I like all of the various works and the different visions of each artist,” said junior communication studies major Joseph Smithe.

Harvey and Koo have a companion exhibit running in the Library’s Annex Gallery through Jan. 11. “Ian Harvey/Koo Kyung Sook, Collaborations” also focuses on the body and features works they have created over the past two years.

The galleries are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. They will be closed Dec. 22 through Jan. 1 for winter break.
