MOJO: ‘Loose Knit:’ Modern comedy/drama plays at Sac State

The Playwrights’ Theatre in Shasta Hall will continue to show Loose Knit, a play directed by Sacramento State assistant professor Michelle Felten. The showing began Thursday and will continue until Sunday.

Loose Knit was written by Theresa Rebeck in the early 1990’s and takes place in New York City. It revolves around five women who have a Sex in the City-type bond with each other. The women – Liz (Brittni Barger), Lily (Whitney Claire Roeder), Paula (Chiyumba Ossome), Margie (Sara Perry) and Gina (Renee DeGarmo) – meet once a week over the course of a month for their knitting group where they discuss their lives and their relationships. There are also two men in the story: Bob (Brandon Johnson), who is married to Lily, and Miles (Paul Alary), who dates three of the knitters.

“It’s a real actor’s play,” said Felten. She said the play isn’t so much about overly elaborate sets – although there is a scene that involves Gina’s apartment being almost entirely covered by various knitted objects including a “14-foot knitted monstrosity” – but about the personalities of the characters and how they respond to each other.

Felten said the actors portray their characters so well that they seem to transform into their characters.

“They’re so well cast; it’s hard to imagine them being anyone other than the characters,” she said. She said audience members might find it hard to believe that these are Sac State students, and not seven people living their daily lives in New York City.

Felten said the play holds something for a variety of different audiences.

“I think there’s a little bit of something in there that most people can relate to,” she said, mentioning the realness of the characters and the events in their lives.

However, while the play may be very appealing to a college-aged group and other adults, Felten said Loose Knit might not be the best play to bring children to.

“There’s some strong language in it,” she said.

Felten said the Sac State population will enjoy the show, because of its entertaining modern feel. She said although the play is billed as a comedy, viewers can definitely expect some serious moments as well.

“We’re hoping to have a much bigger crowd this weekend, because we’d hate to have anyone miss out on this fabulous show and the?fabulous acting talent,” Felten said.

The play begins at 6:30 tonight and tomorrow. The tickets are specially priced at $8 for all who attend.

The play begins at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The tickets are $10 for students, seniors and Sac State employees. General admission is $12. The final showing of the play is at 2 p.m. on Sunday; ticket prices will be the same.
