Former Sacramento State men’s basketball players Jameel Pugh and Joel Jones were selected in the 2006 National Basketball Development League Draft on Thursday.

Pugh went 68th overall in the draft to the Dakota Wizards and was the eighth player taken in the sixth round.

Jones was allocated to the Los Angeles D-Fenders before the draft started. Each of the 12 teams in the league is allowed to take two players from that team’s home market. Jones, a native of San Diego, was snatched up due to this fact.

The NBDL is a 12-team feeder league for the NBA, with teams in New Mexico, Los Angeles, North Dakota and Texas, among others.

Pugh and Jones became the first Sac State players drafted by a team with NBA affiliation since the San Francisco Warriors selected Greg Reed in the ninth round of the 1969 NBA Draft.

They are the second and third Sac State player sdrafted by a professional basketball team this fall, following guard DaShawn Freeman. The all-time assist and steal leader was the 43rd overall selection and a fifth-round draft pick by the Butte Daredevils in the Continental Basketball Association draft.

“This is going to be the biggest day of the year for me,” Pugh said a couple weeks before the draft. “I can finally get back into my passion.”

In Pugh’s career at Sac State he averaged 12.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 53 games. Jones averaged 12.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals in his Sac State career.

Pugh was named to the All-Big Sky First Team his senior season at Sac State and finished second in the 2005 ESPN College Slam Dunk Championship. Jones won all-Big Sky honors in 2001-02 and 2003-04.

The Anaheim Arsenal selected former Sacramento Kings second-round draft pick Corsley Edwards with the No. 1 overall selection in the draft.

Pugh will be joined by:

6-foot-10-inch forward Justin Williams (Wyoming) drafted in the first round.

6-foot-7-inch forward Quemont Greer (DePaul) drafted in the second round.

6-foot-5-inch guard Brandon Armstrong (Pepperdine) drafted in the third round.

6-foot-4-inch guard Ricky Shields (Rutgers) drafted in the fourth round.

6-foot-5-inch guard Dontell Jefferson (Arkansas) drafted in the fifth round.
