That buzz you hear is the Sacramento State women’s soccer team playing its best soccer in years. The Hornets (7-6-3, 3-0-1) defeated the Vikings of Portland State (4-9-2, 1-2-1) 2-1 Sunday in Oregon in a Big Sky conference game.

In the 13th minute, Hornets forward Kelly Novak passed to forward Katie McCoy who found the net for her fifth goal of the season. Novak was given an assist on the play. In the 24th minute McCoy scored on a penalty kick to give the Hornets a 2-0 halftime lead. Less than 30 seconds into the second half the Vikings scored on a goal from defender Juli Edwards.

The win helped the Hornets maintain their lead in the Big Sky conference. Sac State is the only remaining unbeaten Big Sky team. McCoy leads the team with six goals on the season and has now scored three goals in the Hornets last two games.

Sac State has won its last four games and has a record of 4-0-1 in its last five and has outscored opponents 12-4 in that time. The Hornets were out-shot 13-7 by the Vikings. Hornets goalie Jenny Lawrence was credited with five saves. The Hornets next game is Thursday when they take on the Bengals of Idaho State in Idaho.
