The Sacramento State women’s soccer team left Texas on Sunday with a record of 0-1-1 in the Sun City Invitational hosted by Texas-El Paso.

Sac State opened the tournament against UTEP on Friday. The game wasn’t decided until two minutes and 39 seconds into overtime when Miners sophomore forward Angie Kleinfelder scored on an assist from fellow sophomore forward Brandi Aston to win the game 1-0.

Up to the time of the goal the game was even with Sac State out-shooting UTEP by a count of 12-10 in regulation. However, UTEP took the only two shots of overtime, with Kleinfelder’s proving to be the difference.

The Hornets were only able to get four shots on goal, one each by midfielders Maggie Murphy, Courtney Gorham, Linda Sanchez and Rebeccah Phillips. Sac State’s Sarah Howard and Linda Sanchez received yellow cards in a match in which saw the Hornets committed 19 fouls to only six for UTEP. The loss dropped Sac State’s record to 2-3 on the season. UTEP improved its unbeaten record to 6-0.

The Hornets’ second opponent was Mississippi State on Sunday. The Hornets yet again decided that regulation wasn’t enough in this one.

Sac State and the Bulldogs played to a scoreless tie after two overtime periods. The Hornets had numerous scoring chances as they out-shot Mississippi State 18-9. Sac State also had 11 corner kicks but could not find the net on any of them. Mississippi State could muster only one corner kick on the day. Sac State senior defender Amber Dragomir led the team with three shots on goal while midfielders Maggie Murphy and Sarah Howard both contributed two.

Hornet freshman goalie Jennifer Lawrence had three saves in the match, finishing with her third shutout in her first six games. Mississippi State goalie Emily Meyers made a game-high six saves for the Bulldogs, whose still winless record now stands at 0-2-3 on the season. The tie was the first of the year for Sac State. Their record now stands at 2-3-1 on the season.

After playing four games in a span of 10 days the Hornets now have 11 days off before they play again. Their next game is Friday, Sept. 23 at 3 p.m. against Cal State Northridge at Hornet Soccer Field.
