The Sacramento State women’s soccer team (10-7-2, 4-2-1) is headed to the Big Sky Tournament for the second straight year after defeating Portland State by a score of 1-0 on Friday night in Portland.

The lone goal of the game came from the head of freshman forward Kim Kemper after an indirect kick in the 30th minute. The goal was Kemper’s third of the season. Junior forward Katie McCoy was credited with the assist. McCoy leads the team with six assists on the year.

The win set a new program record for Sac State, which had won nine games on three occasions.

Sac State outshot the Vikings 19-9 in the match and freshman goalie Mandy Trojan made three saves to preserve the shutout.

Beverly Goebel again led the Hornets in shots with five.

The win by Sac State clinches first place for Idaho State (9-7-0, 5-1-0). They will play Weber State on Saturday in Utah, which may help to clear up the rest of the tournament pool.

As of now there are four teams fighting for the two remaining slots. The fates of Weber State (8-6-3, 3-2-1), Portland State (4-13-1, 4-3-0), Montana (9-8-1, 3-2-1) and Northern Arizona (7-9-1, 2-3-1) hang in the balance until conference games wrap up on Sunday.

Sac State assured itself a spot no lower than third in the four-team tournament. A series of tiebreakers may be needed to determine each team’s final spot.

The Big Sky Tournament will be held in Pocatello, ID on Nov. 2-4. First-seeded Idaho State will take on the fourth seed while Sac State will take on the second/third seed, depending on final regular season results.

The winner of each match will play on Nov. 4 for the right to call itself Big Sky champion.
