Golden goal stops Hornets

The Sacramento State’s women’s soccer team vowed to never lose in overtime this season. Unfortunately, just 19 seconds into the second overtime period on Friday, the Hornets did just that. Boise State’s Annie Tom’s goal lifted the Broncos to the 4-3 win and left the Hornets and their fans in stunned silence.

The game was reminiscent of Sac State’s 2-0 opening loss to Nevada. In both games the Hornets controlled the ball and the game, but just couldn’t get over the top.

The scoring began with Boise State in the 37th minute. Boise’s Danielle Schwalbe got a cross from the left and headed it past Hornets goalkeeper Jenny Lawrence. Eight minutes after halftime the Broncos made it 2-0 when Nicole Coleman received a penalty kick, which she put in the left corner.

The Hornets began a furious comeback less than a minute later. Junior forward Kayelyn Satkowski scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season after a cross from Maggie Murphy. In the 59th minute midfielder Sarah Howard’s shot deflected off of a Boise State player to the feet of Satkowski, who tied the game and lengthened her team lead in goals to six.

It had taken only 11 minutes to erase a two goal deficit, but Sac State wasn’t done. With only 10 minutes remaining senior forward Kelly Novak connected on a shot from in close off of a deflection in front of the goal. The goal was Novak’s first of the season.

With a 3-2 lead, many of the Hornets thought that the game was over. “I thought we had it,” Novak said. “I thought the game was ours. We thought it was in the bag and we played like it.”

In the 86th minute it was Boise’s turn to respond. Brennan Lau’s goal tied the game at three and eventually sent the game into overtime.

The first 10 minute frame went by without incident, leading to the final chance for either team to come out on top in double overtime. Just 19 seconds in and the game was over. The Hornets defense overplayed the ball which got through the defense. Tom was there to skip it by Lawrence for the decider.

“It’s tough in that we said we would never lose in overtime,” assistant coach Randy Dedini said. “We made a mistake in the second overtime and we left the goal wide open.”

Dedini was more concerned with the possible loss of yet another Hornet player. Freshman defender Katie Rorabaugh, who has been shutting down the opposition all season, went down early in the second half with what the team hopes is just a right knee strain. The team has already suffered the losses of midfielder Beccah Phillips and defender Tiffany Fraser. Losing Rorabaugh would be huge for the team right before conference play begins, Dedini said.

The loss dropped the Hornets to 5-5-1 on the season while the Broncos improved to 5-4. Sac State’s final tune-up before conference play comes on tomorrow at Noon against Cal Poly.
