It was a rough return home to the Hornets nest for the women’s basketball team on Friday night. After spending nearly a month on the road the Hornets returned home only to be dealt a 75-42 loss at the hands of the Nevada Wolf Pack. The loss marked the seventh in a row for the Hornets, after winning their first game of the season against Bethany.

Three Wolf Pack players finished in double figures, led by Traci Graham’s 15 points on 6-12 shooting, including three second-half three-pointers as well as five steals. Brandi Fitzgerald and Dellena Criner added 12 points apiece.

For the third consecutive game sophomore Atty Boyer led the Hornets (1-7) in scoring, and recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

In the final 20 minutes, Nevada shot 60.0 percent from the floor, including a 5-6 performance from beyond the arc to build its lead. Sac State freshman forward Erika Edwards, in her second career start, finished with eight points and a career-best nine rebounds.

The Hornets managed to shoot just 40.9 percent from the floor (18-44), but it was turnovers that did them in. For almost the full 40 minutes Nevada used a full-court press to disrupt Sac State’s offense and forced the Hornets into a season-high 37 turnovers. Nevada converted the turnovers into 40 points.

The majority of the damage was done in the second half as Nevada’s defense held the Hornets to just 18 points.

“We have to control the tempo of the game,” Head Coach Dan Muscatell said. “We are undersized and tempo is how we will win ball games.”

Nevada was also dominant in the paint, outscoring the Hornets 42-8.Sacramento State next travels to play Causeway rival UC Davis at 2:05 p.m. on Sunday at the Pavilion.
