Protesters from the International Association of Ironworkers, Local Union 118, who are building Parking Structure III, gathered in front of McCarthy Construction trailers at Sacramento State on Friday to rally against the company’s policy of employing both union and nonunion workers, said Frank Whitlatch, associate vice president of Public Affairs.

Carrying signs, the workers silently picketed, refusing to speak with anyone about their grievances. Instead, they handed out slips of paper containing outdated contact information for a deceased attorney and a disconnected phone number.

Emily Rich, attorney at Weinberg, Rodger & Rosenfeld, A Professional Corporation, the union’s file was passed on to her from the late attorney Victor Vanberg.

Rich said she was surprised about the protest and the protesters refusal to talk about the situation.

“I really don’t know why they were protesting, or who sent them. Their case was passed down to me, but it’s an old case,” Rich said.

Rich attempted to make calls to figure out who and why they were out there, but had no luck. “I’m not sure who they are, especially since they’re obviously carrying around outdated information,” Rich said.

McCarthy Construction, although aware of the picketers’ motive, refused to comment on the situation. “Yeah, we know why they’re out there, but we’re not talking to any media right now,” a McCarthy Construction associate said.
